Bland joined the Cornell faculty in 1978 after four years as an assistant professor of mathematical sciences at the State University of New York at Binghamton. From 1975 until 1977 he held a research fellowship at the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics in Louvain, Belgium, and a visiting professorship at the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management in Brussels; from 1978 to 1980 he was an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation research fellow. At Cornell, Bland is affiliated with the Center for Applied Mathematics. He is a member of the Mathematical Optimization Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education. He has twice been selected by the School of OR&IE undergraduates as the best teacher in the School, and has been chosen three times for a Merrill Outstanding Educator Award, one of Cornell's most prestigious teaching awards.
