Bland joined the Cornell faculty in 1978 after four years as an assistant professor
of mathematical sciences at the State University of New York at Binghamton. From 1975
until 1977 he held a research fellowship at the Center for Operations Research and
Econometrics in Louvain, Belgium, and a visiting professorship at the European Institute
for Advanced Studies in Management in Brussels; from 1978 to 1980 he was an Alfred P.
Sloan Foundation research fellow. At Cornell, Bland is affiliated with the Center for
Applied Mathematics. He is a member of the
Mathematical Optimization Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education.
He has twice been selected by the School of OR&IE undergraduates as the best teacher in
the School, and has been chosen three times for a Merrill Outstanding Educator Award, one
of Cornell's most prestigious teaching awards.
